Marjie Southerland was born and built in New Jersey, but has been privileged to have performance carry her many different places across the country. Her performance chops were first sharpened in church, performing in concerts and cantatas. She continued to grow and hone her skills in high school and college eventually pursuing a life as a professional performer and creative artist. Her recent adventures have landed her in Richmond, Virginia where her recent roles include Harriet Tubman in a Virginia Repertory Theatre production of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.

Prior to moving to Virginia she was an active member of the Chicago theater community and represented by Johnson McKay Talent.

The choice to relocate to Virginia from Chicago came with the opportunity to work for the largest living history museum in the country, Colonial Williamsburg. She spent 5 years in Williamsburg acting and interpreting the lives of free and enslaved blacks of the 18th century.

Marjie’s talents span across performance and additionally dip into production and event coordination. Recently, she was given the position of Community Board Chair for Gallery 5, a Richmond based non-profit community gallery.
